JC Associates is a Design Build & Maintain landscape contracting firm in Sterling Illinois. It was founded in 1991 when the then-manager, Joel Cook, and his wife Shawn made the decision to purchase the business. Joel had been the manager for the existing firm for 5 years since getting his education in Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois. The business had more than quadrupled in size during those years. “I was sitting in my office one July afternoon and the business owner walked came in and announced that he was thinking of selling the landscaping portion of thebusiness.” He said, “that both the flower shop and landscaping were growing too fast for the current location.” After a bit of deliberation the decision was made and JC Associates was founded.

At that time the business was more of a one-stop shop concerning landscaping. Since that time it has gone from handling all of a customers wants, to being more specialized in the design and installation of outdoor living spaces. “I think that my education makes me a bit different than some of the other people in the area; and we still will handle all aspects of an overall project for our customers. But we will farm out certain features of a design if it is not something we are comfortable doing. We feel that it is more important to provide a quality product for the customer than do it ourselves.”

Early on the majority of precast concrete work was simple patio’s, retaining walls, sidewalks; with an occasional driveway. Nowadays it has grown to include such items as fire pits, pool paving, outdoor fireplaces, seat walls, pillars, and even entire kitchens. The versatility of the pavingstone (brick) and retaining wall block has made it possible to create a seemingly endless combination of color, texture and shapes that will be unique and specific to your individual taste.

In 2000 JC Associates won the grand prize in Unilock’s yearly Awards Of Excellence competition. Unilock is one of the leading manufacturers of pre-cast concrete paving and wall materials.
